
Prior to the postseason, Embiid suffered a stress fracture in his back and did not play for the Jayhawks in either the Big 12 or NCAA Tournament. He was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and made the All-Big 12 Second Team, as well as the All-Big 12 Freshman Team.

During that lone season, Embiid averaged 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.6 blocks despite playing just 23.1 minutes per game. There, he posted per-game averages of 13.0 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots as a senior, helping his team to a state championship. He enrolled at Montverde Academy and later transferred to The Rock School, in Gainesville, Florida. In 31.1 minutes per game, Embiid averaged 28.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.4 combined blocks-plus-steals. Embiid is coming off a 2020-21 season in which he finished second in MVP voting behind Nikola Jokic.
