Prior to the postseason, Embiid suffered a stress fracture in his back and did not play for the Jayhawks in either the Big 12 or NCAA Tournament. He was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and made the All-Big 12 Second Team, as well as the All-Big 12 Freshman Team.
During that lone season, Embiid averaged 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.6 blocks despite playing just 23.1 minutes per game. His many standout games included a 13-point, 11-rebound, eight-block performance in a win over Oklahoma State. He started 15 conference games and averaged 11.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.6 blocks. There, he posted per-game averages of 13.0 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots as a senior, helping his team to a state championship. He enrolled at Montverde Academy and later transferred to The Rock School, in Gainesville, Florida. However, Embiid took up basketball when he was 15 and moved to the United States at age 16 to focus on the sport. He also posted a career-high true shooting percentage (63.6) by a significant margin.
In 31.1 minutes per game, Embiid averaged 28.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.4 combined blocks-plus-steals. Embiid is coming off a 2020-21 season in which he finished second in MVP voting behind Nikola Jokic.
